For contacts completing BGLiD verification sent by your accountant or adviser via Firm Verify or CAS 360
Contents
1. Use a supported document
BGLiD only accepts specific Australian documents. If you try to verify with anything else, it will fail automatically, so it's worth checking the list before you start.
(app-based, e.g. NSW/VIC)| Document type | Accepted? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Australian Driver's Licence (light vehicle) — physical card | ✔ Yes | Standard car licence (class C). Card must not be expired. |
| Australian Passport | ✔ Yes | Must be current (not expired). |
| Australian Medicare Card | ✔ Yes* | *Secondary document only. Must be selected alongside an Australian Passport or Driver's Licence — cannot be used on its own. |
| ✘ No | Use your physical card instead. | |
| Heavy vehicle licence (HR, HC, MC) | ✘ No | Use an Australian Passport or standard car licence instead. |
| New Zealand Passport | ✘ No* | *Accepted in limited cases only. Contact your adviser. |
| Non-Australian passport | ✘ No* | *May be accepted if you hold a current Australian visa. Contact your adviser. |
| Overseas driver's licence | ✘ No | Not supported. |
| Any expired document | ✘ No | Expired documents will always fail. Check the expiry date before starting. |
Sample Australian Driver Licence (Queensland). The Card No. is separate from the Licence No. and changes each time a new card is issued.
2. Licence card number vs licence number — use the right one
Your Australian Driver's Licence has two different numbers on it, and people mix them up constantly. Using the wrong one is the most common reason verifications fail.
| Field | Where it appears | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| Licence Number | Labelled "Licence No." on the front | Your unique licence identifier. Stays the same across renewals. |
| Card Number Use this one | Labelled "Card No." on the front or back | Changes each time a new card is issued. BGLiD uses this number to verify your licence is current. |
Australian passport — older design (left) and current design (right). Both are accepted provided the passport is current and not expired.
3. Use your physical card, not a digital licence app
The NSW and VIC digital licence apps on your phone won't work here. BGLiD needs your physical plastic card. If you don't have it on you, wait until you do before starting.
4. Taking a clear photo of your ID
Blurry and dark photos are a very common failure point. A few seconds of setup makes a real difference:
|
1
|
Lay the card flat on a plain, dark-coloured surface (a table or desk works well). |
|
2
|
Use good lighting. Natural light or a well-lit room works best. Avoid direct sunlight or flash (both cause glare that makes text unreadable). |
|
3
|
Hold your phone still directly above the card. Resting your elbow on the table helps. |
|
4
|
Keep all four corners in frame so no text is cut off. |
|
5
|
Check the preview before confirming. If the text looks blurry, retake it. |
5. Taking your selfie
BGLiD checks that your selfie matches the photo on your ID. The system is strict about this, so lighting and positioning matter more than most people expect.
|
1
|
Face the camera directly. Head straight, centred in the frame. |
|
2
|
Remove glasses and hats. These make it harder for the system to match your face to your ID photo. |
|
3
|
Light your face from the front. A bright window or lamp behind you will make your face too dark and the check will fail. |
|
4
|
Do not screenshot the verification screen during the process. This can trigger a security flag and cause the check to fail even if everything else is correct. |
|
5
|
Follow the on-screen prompts. If asked to blink, turn your head, or smile, do it — these steps confirm you're a real person completing the verification live. |
6. Don't forget to tap Submit
This trips up a lot of people. After uploading your ID details, there's one more step: your verification isn't sent until you tap Submit on the summary screen.
|
1
|
After uploading your ID, tap Close. |
|
2
|
A summary screen appears showing the information captured. Review it. |
|
3
|
Tap Submit to send your verification. |
7. If your link has expired
BGLiD links expire 21 days after they're sent. If you open the link and get an error, you've passed that window. Let your accountant or adviser know and ask them to send a new request.
8. If your verification failed
Your adviser will be notified automatically and can send you a new link. You don't need to do anything until it arrives. When it does, the table below covers the most common issues and how to fix them before you try again.
| What went wrong | What to do next time |
|---|---|
| Wrong card number entered | Find the Card No. printed on the front or back of your physical licence. It's different from the Licence No. |
| Photo was blurry or unreadable | Lay the card flat, use front-facing light, hold your phone steady, and check the preview before submitting. |
| Selfie didn't match ID | Face the camera directly, remove glasses and hats, and make sure the light is on your face rather than behind you. |
| Unsupported document type | Use an Australian Driver's Licence (physical card) or Australian Passport. Digital licences and heavy vehicle licences won't work. |
| Document was expired | Check the expiry date before you start. Even one day past expiry will fail. |
| Name on ID doesn't match records | Contact your adviser — they may need to fix the spelling in their system before sending a new request. |
Still need help?
Contact your accountant or adviser directly. They can check the status of your request, fix any details, and send a new link if needed.
